FIRST SNOW FOR HAMPTON ROADS IN 2021!

It has been about 3 years since Hampton Roads has received any measurable snow. Last big storm was the blizzard of 2018 where large portions of the area saw 8-12 inches fall. But on January 28th 2021, we would get a general 2-3 inches across the southside and into northeast North Carolina. It started in the early morning hours and continued to fall through daybreak until about 9am. Temps have been warmer than usual through the first half of winter leading to roadways only being wet from the melt. Some spots however were slick and snow covered, but generally the snow stuck to roof tops, trees, fences and grassy areas. Temps near 32 degrees led to it coating the trees in a blanket of white. Usually once the temps drop below 30 or so, the snow becomes drier powdery snow and doesn’t stick as well to trees and other objects like fences and blows easily off roof tops.

Below are some images taken while at work Thursday morning before the sun came out and started to melt the snow away. Mainly Suffolk Virginia with the exception of the snow covered bush a few blocks from my house, and the cardinal which was in my backyard in Portsmouth.

Snow stuck to branches turning it a beautiful shade of white.
