AS AUTUMN ARRIVES
As we kicked off October, it was warmer than usual outside here along the east coast. However, evidence of fall was being seen as leaves have begun to change and fall from the trees. Late afternoon October 1st, I went to my backdoor to step outside and noticed at least a half dozen blue birds in the yard. Several on our feeders, and 2 on posts on our deck. We have been trying to lure them to the yard this year, and it seems to have worked. We have one blue bird house up right now, with no renters, but hoping we could at least get some next year. Well, it may turn out that we get some to move into our house this fall and winter. I grabbed the camera and slowly opened the door to begin shooting the birds on the post first. Surprisingly, they didn’t fly off and I managed grab a couple shots. After which I grabbed a few images of he ones on the feeders. After watching them for several minutes, a larger bird came ripping in and they scattered. One stopping to check out the new digs on the post we put in the yard, he leaned down from the rooftop peering in through the opening, after which he flew off. So my attention turned to the bird that scared them off. A woodpecker. A Red-Bellied Woodpecker. I’ve been wanting to catch these guys also as they have been seen in my neighbor’s tree in their backyard but I haven’t been lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time. So below are some images of the blue birds and the woodpecker this past week as we have finally turned to autumn here in Virginia. Lets hope we get someone to move into the new house on the block!
